I did some preliminary oil sketches on small canvases, and took them back to the studio and prepared to do a major painting.
Some paintings lend themselves to a large canvas, and make a bigger statement when viewed in this format. This was one of those paintings. It is a typical old Mississippi Clay Road, that graces Lauderdale County here in Meridian, Mississippi. I could feel the sun on the left side of my face as I painted the study, hoping to recall that feeling in the studio when it was time to execute the larger piece. There is a thing called “shock of recognition”, which means for a moment the viewer feels the same feelings the artist had while creating the painting.
This was a sustained painting, and took many hours in the creation, everyone of which I enjoy to the max. I hope you enjoy it also.
As an artist that goes on location, painting directly from nature, I am always on the lookout for something to spark the creative juices. When I came across this road, in the late afternoon sun it stopped me dead in my tracks. The warm glow of the golden hour was bathing everything in a beautiful warm light.
