I’ve had lots of press over the years and unfortunately, I haven’t done the best job of cataloging all of it. However, I’m in the process of doing so and will be updating this section soon. In the interim, please see below for some quotes and comments that others had to share about my artwork…
“Greg Cartmell is definitely a talent America should watch.” – Robert Douglas Hunter.
“He has an eye like an eagle, definitely his father’s son.” – Edward Harrigan
“I taught him to “see” and made him fearless with paint, and color.” – Emile Gruppe.
Cartmell’s use of broken color it is at its absolute peak, encouraging the viewer to mix the color with one’s own eye. His use of chiaroscuro, and color, combined with today’s available pigments, leave a luscious result embracing the viewer to step in and an experience the scene. One can see in his work, the influence of the “Gloucester “and ,” Rockport” school of art , combined with his own method of broken color to create a unique vision of the land he loves . Cartmell is old-school in the sense he goes out on location to paint from nature. He is often said “nature is the ultimate teacher,” and I am fortunate to be a student. His father Robert Cartmell was his first influence and teacher, and placed a brush in his hand at 3 years old, so he has been painting for 64 years. This is evident in the maturity of style he exhibits today.
I was fortunate enough to study with some present day Masters such as Robert Douglas Hunter, Emile Gruppe, Norman Rockwell, and I hope I have made them proud. – Greg Cartmell
