This is a plein air field study done this past summer at Lake Okatibee. These marsh locations offer a never ending combination of color depending on the time of day and the season. I left out the water moccasins.
Landscapes
Impasto Oil Painting Across The Creek
This is a 12×16 oil on panel I did “plein air” near a little creek near my studio. The warm foliage in the foreground was a good opposite to the cool background. I let the colors mix on the canvas instead of mixing on the palette. This helped the color to break up and become more interesting. I love to paint with pure pigment…Hope you like it as well!
Delta Sunset Plein Air Painting
This is just an example of a plein air painting I did this past summer. The sky just stopped me in my tracks. So I pulled over set up and painted this piece while driving through Mississippi. I absolutely love plein air painting and every chance I get I try to do so.
The Mississippi Light Book of Art
For three years I traveled around Mississippi painting all the landscapes of the different areas of the state. I wanted everyone to see what a beautiful state it really is so I compiled all of the art work in one book called “Mississippi Light”. This book is for all those that love Mississippi, have a liking to art and landscape painting and much more!
When i first came to Mississippi i fell in love with the beautiful landscapes and look of the state. I wanted to share the beauty with the rest of the world. It took me three years to travel all over the state and paint on location to capture many of the different looks of the land. This book was dedicated to my dad Robert Cartmell for his unending encouragement to me to keep on painting.
I hope you enjoy reading it as much as I did writing it. Thanks and I hope you enjoy the book and please feel free to contact me with any questions about it! Thank you all! You can purchase the book here now if you’d like and it will be shipped within 24hrs max!
Moonscape Oil Painting On October Night
This is a painting of a moon I saw this past October. It was one of the largest moons I had ever seen and a full moon to boot! It was still light enough to see the colors in the trees and field it was over. I love painting outdoors this time of year. It’s perfect outdoors here in Meridian, Mississippi because it’s not too cool and not too warm. When we do a painting we try to create a believable illusion, however nature has one set of rules and paint has another.
Mississippi Oil Painting After The Storm
This is a 16×20 oil on panel of a sunset i did last summer in Lauderdale County, Mississippi. Typical of the land there its a flat horizon with a red clay road leading off into the sunset. All of of the piece is done with a palette knife, and impasto paint. I never tire of doing sunsets…they’re like fingerprints, no two alike!
Mississippi Horizon Oil Painting
This is a pic of my latest painting. It’s a low horizon piece at about 6 o’clock. The sun was down and causing an orange glow in the sky. Sometimes these soft light pieces are very calming and easy to look at. It’s all done in broken color in a very impressionistic style. I hope you like.
Fly Fisherman Oil Painting on Weber River Utah
This is a fly fisherman painting done while in park city utah. It’s on the Weber River. It was late afternoon and the sun was flowing across the valley. I love these small studies of the effect of light on a scene. Fly fishing is one of those activities that just brings so much pleasure. It’s an activity that takes place in the beautiful outdoors and really what is there not to like about it! This is 11×14 inches on panel done in oils. I hope you like it.
