What would you do if you found out you had a piece of art worth millions that you thought was monetarily almost worthless?
This Board Artwork Turned Out To Be Worth Millions
Irma Stern was a very prolific artist from South Africa. She was well recognized for many things in addition to being incredibly talented. Her artwork is worth a lot of money.
According to The Guardian, an art appraiser named Hannah O’Leary was visiting an apartment and quickly noticed the artwork inside the London apartment. It was being used as a board to hold cards and other small items.
The portrait painting is called “Arab in Black.” It was created in 1939 and later sold to help fund the legal defense of Nelson Mandela.
Hannah immediately spotted this piece and pointed out the value. It’s estimated to be worth $1.5M and is now set to be auctioned off September 9th.
What would you do?
If you, within a matter of minutes found out that you had an asset that was worth over one million dollars, would you keep it or sell it? I can’t answer this question for you. There is no right or wrong answer to the question either.
This is a prime example of how easy it is to underestimate the value of a piece of art. Collectors are constantly trying to educate themselves on various artists and their work. I always encourage this! If you’re looking to buy art online or speak with an artist about investing in art, feel free to contact me directly!
